- Each
day, over 200,000 people visit the World Trade Center and
50,000 people come to work here. Since opening in 1975, 30
million people have visited the Top of the World.
- 1.2 million
cubic yards of earth were excavated during the construction.
Placed in the Hudson River, they created 23.5 acres of new
land for Battery Park.
- The 425,000
cubic yards of concrete used in building the World Trade Center
is enough to build a five-foot wide sidewalk from New York
City to Washington D.C.
- There
are 43,600 windows in the Twin Towers - over 600,000 square
feet of glass cleaned by automatic window washing machines.
- Two express
elevators travel 107 floors in less than a minute - that's
faster than 25 feet per second or 7.5 meters per second.
- On August
7, 1974, Philippe Petit tight-roped from the northwest corner
of the Tower 2 rooftop to Tower 1.
- On May
26, 1977, George Willig suction-cupped his way up the northeast
wall to the Top of the World (we suggest you use the elevator).
- Several
people have parachuted from the southeast corner. One was
successfully retrieved by friends waiting in a high-powered
speed boat on the Hudson River.
